Introduction
The second time of Information Revolution has changed the way people are connected, and the way news spreads is so different from the old days. The concept of New Media was first brought by P.Goldmark, that is, contrast to traditional Media of TV programs, radio, newspaper (Jenkins 2006). New Media is the Media appearance that is based on digital technology, mobile technology and provides the customers with information and entertainment (Pavlik and Dennis 1996). As opinions vary, no unanimous conclusion of concept of New Media can be drawn. We all know that magazine is the Media that is “relatively” new to newspaper, TV is “relatively” new to radio, and the Internet is “relatively” new to TV. However, while enjoying the convenience and flexibility that the modern communication hardware has brought to us, we have to consider some important issues such as health, interpersonal relationship, education, safety that we accidentally ignore.
This essay will discuss the impacts on new media and people’s life in modern time. First, we believe that one has to understand the role of new media in modern people’s life and then to know about the impacts on new media and life. At last, the conclusion be drawn on how to treat new media in our daily life.
 
The Role of New Media
Media exists to carry valuable information to audiences in appropriate condition and in due time. The Media itself, right along with the piece of information it carries is the existence value, including the commercial profits it brings when the information is being carried (Bagdikian 2004). For example, one of the world’s leading video websites- Youtube, which was purchased by Google in 2006 at the price of 1.65 billion dollars, is the place where customers could upload their videos to their homepages, and everyone who is in the circle of friends could share it. Here, the hottest video with the top clicks might not be the warfare in Afghanistan, the American troops’ withdraw in Iraq, nor the Obama’s presidential campaign. As the matter of fact, it could be two black kids’ rap to hip-hop beats, or a white teenage girl’s solo to the camera.
Contrast to Mass Medium- Me Media use technologies that are intended to reach a large audience by mass communication. The “Me Medium” like Youtube is the Media for individual display, by which people could deliver messages and publish information relatively independently and entirely.
Look at these example of how the hottest Media topics were produced by “Me Medium”:
1 “Milky tea girl”’s affairs with Jingdong’s CEO going public causes people’s attention on “May-December romance” .
2 “Yapeng Li’s divorce with Fei Wang” was also noted by a tweet which was edited by Yapeng saying “ our marriage ends in here in my present life, I’m ok with that, and you just take care of yourself”.
3 A blogger published a blog joking about a pupil’s homework, and the internet phrase of “me and my fellow kids were stunned” in June, 2013 just came into vogue a few days later.
There was no conference meeting, no tons of news pager or analyses from experts, no traditional heavyweight worldwide to broadcast these events, but they all rocked and hit the headlines. It seems that we have to admit that the “Me Medium” has already become the information producing center, and its remarkable influence over this industry is able to overwhelm the “Mass Medium”. And even the traditional websites are beginning to open arms to the “Me Medium” like “Sina Blog”. The reason is complicated, but the way “Me Medium” delivers news has something to do with the fact that pace of life is going faster in our modern living environment.
Effects of New Media
Cell phones deliver messages through electromagnetic waves, which are called “Mobile Phone Radiation”. And it’s measured by SAR(Specific Absorption Rate). Discussion about weather the radiation is harmful or not has never stopped. Some people say the harmful effects the radiation has brought us exists and will never vanish just because the mobile phone manufacturers state otherwise(Livingstone 2002). While some other people insist that it does no harm to human body. As matter of fact, it has nothing to do with some diseases like brain tumor. Even some scientists have reached agreement that cell phone radiation has no harm to human body, but rumor has it that cell phone, the most popular portable communication device we use is a huge health threat and might be the biggest spermatozoon killer due to its radiation. Parents are worried about that the electromagnetic radiation could kill their children’s brain cells. While some supporters are stating that the radiation cell phones bring to us is even smaller than the microwave oven.     
Scientists conducted an experiment where the GSM’s radiation effects on cerebral glucose metabolism is examined. In that experiment, some young male subjects were exposed to radiation for Mobile Communications signal for about half an hour, while they are performing a simple task like calculating (Lister 2009). Temperature was also measured in the head region during exposure whose rise was observed on the exposed side of the head, but the magnitude was very small. The exposure did not affect task performance. Their results show that short-term mobile phone exposure can locally suppress brain energy metabolism in humans.
New Media VS. Traditional Media
The traditional media and new media are coexisting today, but it seems that the Old one is being gradually replaced by the New one. The traditional paper and magazine are dying out, when the TV’s getting old. The Internet is growing stronger, especially, the cell phone is just like the vigorous boys and girls in adolescence. In one word, we can say that, presently, the New Media is developing with passion and charm, though it has limitations, but it indicates the development direction of Media(Bennett 2003). The new Media is so aggressive and impulsive due to the facts below:
Timeliness
The realistic significance exists in its timeliness. When something important happens, the New Media represented by the Internet could report that news in first time. It only takes a few minutes for a piece of news from collection to release, and then it goes all over the Internet. But for old medium, the editors’ have to hold a very serious attitude when auditing manuscripts because the authority of traditional Media is characterized with rationality (Dizard 1994). They have to think twice before the news goes released about the truth of the report and details, some of them have to wait until the truth is unearthed. For example, the latest hot news of “pregnant mother of a 7-month baby was forced to be aborted” was first released by a blogger with a name of “I’m not a thief” and drew huge attention from the public. And it caused wide discussion in Internet. But the traditional Media was not reacted on this until half month later.
Interactivity
Through new medium, people can express their ideas and publish their views on a piece of news. And this just breaks the mode of dominant transmission of old medium, which changes the “new communicators’ dominant” to “users’ dominant”. This is all accessed by the buttons of “comment” and “share” (Fenton 2010), for the blog could be replied, while the News paper couldn’t do that immediately (Singer 2005). So the feature of “interactivity” really stands out, and it can’t be matched by the traditional medium. Let’s take the incidence of “pregnant mother” for example: after the news was reported, another blogger revealed that this is very common in the “mother’s” hometown. And then tons of “forced abortion” things were reported one by one. When the blog first drew attention from people, the only interest people have is that they could share videos with their favorite movie stars. But now the feature of “interactivity” is also guaranteed to draw peoples’ eyes.
Diverse Choices
In the old days of traditional medium, users are the receivers. They do not have the authority to choose what they like to keep focus on. However, through New medium, people could make a lot of choices based on their favorites (Pratt 2000). For example, during the “World Cup” this year, the Mainstream Media of sports channel will only provide access to the “World Cup”, but through Internet, people could choose to watch their favorite programs, “World Cup” or not. And it’s also the reason why the IPTC develops so fast. Modern people need a large range of choices so that the personal needs will be satisfied, which just intensifies the conflict ( Downey and Fenton 2003) between the New Media and the Old Medium.
Less Cost
Just like books, what makes newspaper and magazine value more is the information they carry, the words and pictures printed on it, not the paper itself (Downey and Fenton 2003). But for a long time, the paper sheets occupy a very important position in the News industry. Contrast to this, the cost people make to get information from the internet is almost free. Due to the recessive charge the Internet has on the users, people may think it’s a very reasonable way to get information.
Beyond Boundary
The New Media caters to the changing needs of scattered entertaining time from people. For example, if we want to watch a hot program, we have to wait until the prime time in the old days, but through New medium, we can watch that any time we want, as long as we click a button. People own more autonomy on time. The traditional medium, like the local newspaper and TV station, used to get restricted to what happens locally, which intends to satisfy the needs of “approachability” (Van Aelst and Walgrave 2002). Although the national Media would report what happens in everywhere, but it is only limited to big events with meaningful social significance. But with New medium, people will focus on what may be concerned to themselves that happens in every corner.
Conclusion
It can be figured out form the above that today it is a coexistent mixture of New and Old media, the only way out is to work together for both of them. The broad definition of Media Convergence includes the ownership, the structural organization, and the Media industry and Media market (Lundby 2008). But the Media Convergence we are talking about here today is mainly about the technical mixture from the both, that is, news is provided by the traditional medium, tech is supported by the New medium. They should be working together to achieve a win-win cooperation. New Media is not such a huge and deadly threat to the Old medium, it brings challenge to the traditional Media while it also brings opportunities. When facing to shock the New Media has brought, the traditional Media could not just wait for the New Media to join it, it should take initiatives to join the New medium.
